Broward County Public School system achieves outstanding ROI with Kronos workforce management solution
DENVER, Nov. 7, 2008 — To keep within operating budgets while remaining competitive and committed to excellence in education, public school districts are strategizing about ways to improve operational efficiencies. The Broward County Public School system, the nation's sixth-largest public school district and the largest, fully-accredited public school district in the nation, achieved a significant ROI in less than two years of automating its substitute teacher time and attendance data collection through Kronos. "Kronos was selected because of its functionality and ability to streamline a manual process," said Kenneth Zacharias, an IT director at the Broward County Public School system. "With Kronos, we significantly reduced overpayments to substitute teachers, decreased the amount of time administrative staff members spend on workflow processes, and eliminated paper costs. Improved productivity through automation and centralization
As with any K-12 public education institution, Broward County Public Schools was looking for ways to reduce costs unrelated to teaching. Previously, substitute teachers in its 138 elementary schools, 42 middle schools, and 32 high schools recorded their own attendance by manually noting the number of hours worked on time sheets in dispersed locations. Administrators in the specific locations would then combine this data and transfer it to a payroll administrator at headquarters. Since automating and centralizing time and attendance with Kronos across all locations, Broward County Schools has enhanced payroll accuracy and reduced operating expenses, enabling it to spend more on education and remain competitive with for-profit schools.
While some K-12 districts are saving costs through elimination of manual processes and reductions in overtime, others are benefiting by eliminating "buddy punching", the costly act of employees punching in for one another, through the Kronos biometric data collection terminals.
Increased accountability and payroll accuracy
The Newark Public School system improved accountability and payroll accuracy with Kronos. "By automating and standardizing time and attendance across our disparate locations, and by tightly integrating this data with our payroll system, we have ensured accuracy of workflow processes," said Ronald Lee, chief financial officer at the Newark Public School system. "Now, not only do employees feel more accountable to the organization for the time they spend at work, but we are also able to avoid manual payroll errors. This ultimately improves satisfaction of all parties: the staff members, administrators, and the management team."
